The band are pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Haynes on solo trombone for the British Open Contest.

Steven is the solo trombone of the Rothwell Temperance Band and will be returning to them on the contest stage at the Yorkshire Area contest next year.

Steven is just 16 years of age and still at school, but is regarded as one of the most gifted trombone players on the banding circuit. He has earned an enviable reputation with the Rothwell Band over the past couple of years, and was an integral member of the band that won both the Pontins title and the Swiss Open.

The band are pleased to announce the return of Bryan Hurdley for a second stint at Williams Fairey – this time as Associate Conductor.

Bryan was previously the Resident Conductor of the band during 1995-1998 where he worked successfully with both Peter Parkes and James Gourlay.

“We are very pleased to have been able to secure the services of Bryan once more for the Williams Fairey band. His first stint with us was a great success and he has gone on since then to prove himself at the very highest level. Everyone is looking forward to working with him once again, and we are sure that together with Allan Withington we have a tremendous team to direct our performances over the coming year.”

A belated welcome to Leslie Neish and Jon Davies of the new look Faireys Bass section and to Ian Bowd on percussion.

I've been quite busy of late and that is my somewhat flimsy excuse for the lack of updates.

For those Faireys fans who wish to get tickets for the concert on Sunday 16th of June at the Winding Wheel Theatre in Chesterfield, you can order your tickets online at the Prima Arts website.

New Appointment
Posted Thursday, April 4, 2002 by yatia
The Williams Fairey Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Allan Withington as its Principal Conductor.

On receiving the news of Howard Snell’s decision to retire from the contest scene, there was only one name considered as a suitable successor. The Band has followed Allan’s career with interest and admiration for several years and is looking forward to a long and happy relationship that will not only be musically rewarding but also successful.

There have been several major signings at Fairey over the past few months that have strengthened the band and believe that with the arrival of Allan Withington we have the perfect combination to move forward.

In the last few days it was agreed that Allan’s first contest with the band will be at the British Open in September, an occasion eagerly anticipated by all.”

Congratulations to Eb Bass player Will Evans and wife Bev on the arrival of their son Max. Lets hope he doesn't take after his father in the facial hair stakes though!

New Arrivals
Posted Tuesday, January 15, 2002 by yatia
The Williams Fairey Band were delighted to welcome three new players to the band at the start of the new Banding season.

The Bands new new principal cornetist is Ian Porthouse who has been principal at Black Dyke, Yorkshire Building Society and Tredegar. Ian had been deputising with the band during the busy banding month of December and has now joined full time.

Brian Taylor takes a well earned rest (not much chance of that!) following over 20 years service on the Principal Cornet chair by moving down to the third-man down seat on the front row cornets.

Ian is joined by new signings Morgan Griffiths on solo euphonium (ex YBS) and his brother Geraint Griffiths on bass trombone (also ex YBS!).

Ian, Morgan and Geriant will all be featured soloists throughout the new concert season.
